Maxwell Park

Nestled in the hills of Mills College, Maxwell Park has enjoyed popularity and growth in the last few years from the influx of homebuyers looking for character, sun and an easy commute.
In the 1920s, Walter Dixon, a little-known Oakland architect, and R.C. Hillen, a contractor, teamed up to create entire neighborhoods of bungalows for "regular folk" in Maxwell Park. According to the SF Chronicle, "[t]hey had a whimsical side, such as the Modest Mansion advertisement for their small homes. "A killing in Maxwell Park Superhot market, period renovation create bidding war for Oakland Bungalow." 04/2002.
Occasionally, they would trot out the ultimate in architectural diversity and construct, on the same street, a medieval-tinged home with a turret, one with French Normandy overtones, and others with Spanish influences. In 1923, they built one of their typical bungalows in Oakland's Maxwell Park neighborhood and sold it for $6,000. Nearly eight decades later, homes in Maxwell Park have been selling far above the $6,000 mark to homeowners lured in by the built-ins, hardwood floors, beautiful archways, Spanish style facades, breakfast nooks and more.
To reach Maxwell Park, take 580 to the High Street or MacArthur Blvd. exit. The neighborhood is nestled between High, MacArthur, Brookdale, Trask and 55th Avenue.
